Purdue Pharma Reaches $270 Million Settlement With Oklahoma in Opioid Crisis Case

-From NPR As a result of a lawsuit filed by the Oklahoma Attorney General, Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, has agreed to pay $270 million to fund addiction research and treatment in Oklahoma and pay legal fees. Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter filed suit two years ago alleging Purdue helped ignite the opioid crisis with aggressive marketing of the blockbuster drug OxyContin and deceptive claims that downplayed the dangers of addiction. Did You Know? Opioid Overdoses Surpass Motor Vehicle Crashes as the Leading Cause of Accidental Death in the U.S. The nation’s opioid crisis has reached new and alarming heights. The National Safety Council (NSC) has recently reported that the odds of accidental death from an opioid overdose have surpassed motor vehicle crashes as a leading cause of death. According to this grim report, the lifetime odds of dying  from an accidental opioid overdose are one in 96. NSC has noted in this report that this crisis is worsening with an influx of illicit fentanyl. The odds of dying from an opioid overdose as reported by the NSC are statistical averages.
